It is almost a miniature version of Singapore’s transformation, from railway and kampong land, to early public housing and factories, and now to a new generation of high-density housing. 🦺🦺🦺\n\n🚂 1. Why is it called “Tanglin Halt”?\n\nThe name is tied to the Malayan Railway. 🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️\n\nWhen the railway route to Tanjong Pagar opened in 1932, there was a small railway stop in the Tanglin\u002FQueenstown area. The railway corridor subsequently became an important physical feature beside the neighbourhood.\n\nThe word “Halt” literally referred to a railway stopping point, hence the name Tanglin Halt. 🌳🌳🌳🌳\n\nFor generations of residents, trains were part of everyday life. The KTM tracks ran immediately alongside the estate, and residents remembered the train horns as part of Tanglin Halt’s soundscape.\n\nThe railway finally ceased operation through this corridor in 2011, after which the tracks were removed and the land became today’s Rail Corridor. 🥫🥫🥫🥫🥫\n\n🏘️ 2. Tanglin Halt became part of Singapore’s first satellite town\n\nThis is where its history becomes nationally significant. 🥗🥗🥗🥗\n\nQueenstown was Singapore’s first satellite town, conceived by the colonial-era Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT). It was named in 1953 in connection with Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.\n\nThe idea was quite advanced for the time: instead of simply building housing, planners wanted a self-contained town with homes + factories + shops + markets + schools + clinics. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕\n\nTanglin Halt was designated Neighbourhood Four of the Queenstown plan. HDB took over from SIT in 1960 and greatly accelerated construction. 🍖🍖🍖🍖🍖\n\nSome of the early Tanglin Halt\u002FCommonwealth blocks date from 1962. 🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭\n\nAnd here’s a lovely piece of Singapore trivia:\n\nThe famous ten-storey blocks around Commonwealth Drive became known in Hokkien as “chup lau chu” 十楼厝, essentially “ten-storey houses.”\n\nBlocks 74–80 were even depicted on Singapore’s 1967 Orchid Series $1 note. 🥘🥘🥘🥘🥘🥘\n\nSo those humble-looking blocks were once symbols of a futuristic Singapore. 🧃🧃🧃🧃🧃🧃\n\n📺 3. Tanglin Halt wasn’t just housing. It helped industrialise Singapore.\n\nThis part is especially interesting. 🍹🍹🍹🍹\n\nThe government developed the Tanglin Halt Industrial Estate during the 1960s. It occupied about 20 acres and contained 38 factory lots, deliberately located close to the railway and a large pool of workers. 🎱🎱🎱🎱\n\nFactories there included Setron (Singapore Electronics), Van Houten chocolate, Diethelm aluminium and Unitex garments. 🥗🥗🥗🥗\n\nAnd Tanglin Halt has a genuine “Made in Singapore” claim to fame:\n\nSingapore’s first locally produced black-and-white television was manufactured by Setron at Tanglin Halt in 1964. 📺🇸🇬\n\nImagine the neighbourhood in the 1960s: thousands of families living in brand-new HDB flats, factories operating nearby, workers walking to work, trains rumbling alongside the estate and hawkers and neighbourhood shops appearing to serve everyone. ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️\n\nThat combination of housing + employment + transport + community facilities was exactly what Singapore’s early planners were trying to achieve. 🏓🏓🏓🏓🏓\n\n🏪 4. A community develops\n\nThe Tanglin Halt Neighbourhood Centre opened in 1964, becoming the commercial and social heart of the estate. ⛳️⛳️⛳️⛳️🥍\n\nOver the following decades, Tanglin Halt matured into the familiar old-school Singapore neighbourhood many people remember: provision shops, coffeeshops, hawkers, wet-market activity and residents who had known one another for decades. 🛝🛝🛝🛝🛝\n\nMeanwhile, Singapore’s economy changed.\n\nBy the late 1980s, many Tanglin Halt factories began relocating to larger industrial estates. The old labour-intensive factories were eventually replaced by modern commercial and industrial buildings such as One Commonwealth and the Haw Par Corporation Technocentre. ⛸️⛸️⛸️⛸️⛸️⛸️\n\n🏗️ 5. The great redevelopment\n\nThen came another enormous transformation. 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣\n\nIn 2014, Tanglin Halt was selected for HDB’s Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS).\n\nThe programme affected 3,480 flats across 31 blocks, making it the largest SERS exercise announced at the time. 🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♀️🚣🏼‍♀️\n\nThat effectively brought the original 1960s Tanglin Halt chapter to an end.\n\nBut Tanglin Halt isn’t disappearing.\n\nIt is being reborn. 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼\n\nHDB’s rejuvenation plans envisage more than 6,000 new homes by around 2030, together with new amenities and connections to the Rail Corridor.\n\nImportantly, planners have deliberately incorporated references to Tanglin Halt’s heritage, including the memory of the famous chup lau chu blocks. 🪊🪊🪊🪊🪊\n\nPlay with Passion! Live with Happiness! 🍭🍭🍭\n\nWR,\nRoy Lin\nFounder, THPC 🔋🔋🔋🔋",1781737910,"uwinyipfcphy","'club':4 'halt':2 'picketball':3 'pickleball':5 'tanglin':1",{},[],"c64f8dabc2a4"]
